my god i love reading your work. it's criminal how good you are at this. I've read so many batman/Superman fics. Written them too, and yet, your Bruce and your Clark feel so much more like real people than any other fic i've ever read. hell even the comics--people who are paid to do it--can't get as much personality into their characters 70 plus years of back story not withstanding. The argument that Clark has with himself--and is annoyed by--about using his powers, i would never have thought of that in a million years, but it *so* right. And Bruce, disgusted by the cost of the car, again *so* right. You've hit them so spot on! i cannot wait for the rest.

I'm really, really loving the identity play in this story. Also, the first few lines, about Clark feeling out of place because he felt average in the midst of the white tie party was awesome, especially since Clark is anything but average! I also like that Bruce is letting Clark see parts of his true self not so much because he automatically trusts Clark but because it helps him manipulate the situation to his own purposes. It's an element of identity play that I haven't seen in S/B fic before, that I can recall.

I look forward to the next chapter!

    Bruce, God I love 'im.
    Oooh, more?

I love Clark's description of the Change here:
"Because he’d turned when he’d heard the doors click behind him, only to find someone had stolen Bruce Wayne. They’d taken one of the most famous faces in the world and replaced him with something… dark. Something dark and ancient that pierced him with eyes like a winter sky and for a moment Clark saw—"

I love how Clark almost sees Batman, but not quite. Though how is he still not twigging to it after that?

I love how Clark is so shocked by the truth of Bruce's analysis - it's not anything he hasn't heard before but it hits home this time because there's no ulterior motive behind it.

I love how Bruce is being more honest than Clark knows - he's saying he wants to find a way to stop Superman and giving his reasons to The Man himself, but Clark doesn't know that.

And Bruce. Have I mentioned I love Bruce? Oh Bruce, you sexy bastard.

Honestly? Because the story says he doesn't. :P

I mean, sure I can make up some excuses about how it's due to him not knowing where to look and all that, but... nah, it's just a plot device.

    mwahahaha.....oh, this is hot.

and interesting. and hot. did i mention hot? i love UST. but i like RST even more.

i would love to see you continue this. i'll be looking for more :)

    Alis' Reply:
Should be continuing it... er, I hope. Getting a bit distracted for the next month though with the WF Christmas stuff. :)

I liked Clark's nervousness here. Farm boy in a white tie setting would be unsure of himself! :)

Good verbal interplay between the two of them.

Clark's loneliness really stands out here. Good job!

Really... this is shaping up to be my absolute favorite movieverse crossover - and really, its because your characterization is so SHARP. You get the complexities of Clark and Bruce down so well that something as simple as a first meeting fic (which there are many of) can stand out so much. And though youve labeled this as slash, and I cannot wait until it moves in that direction, leaving this as strict gen would make it canon-worthy.

    Alis' Reply:
I think that's most of the fun, though, really; taking an old idea and seeing if you can present it in a way that is still enjoyable for the readers. In some respects I think slashfic is the perfect vehicle for this because, ultimately, most people don't really mind that they're seen the same story 500 times already. It's about the execution, rather than how 'original' your idea is. :)

And the rest of the fun is writing something that could be canon; I think that's probably the highest praise a fanfic author can get, so I'm humbled and thank you. u_u

Oh, your web page confounds me because I want to cut and paste a bunch of my favorite lines and then, once I start writing the comment, the fic is no longer readily available. *jiggers her windows a bit* There!

I could pretty much read massive amounts of "Bruce and Clark at a party," but with the identity porn this is infinitely enjoyable.

The whole thing was just so… so rude that, in a perhaps ill-advised show of defiance he’d spent about fifteen minutes being Kal.

*grin* Clark playing with the identities, unable to find one that works, is a delightful image.

It was the brutally clinical tone of voice, Clark thought, that left him feeling cold inside. Luthor hated Superman and that was… easy somehow, easier to dismiss the man’s ranting as madness. Wayne’s emotionless, tactical analysis hurt. Because he was right, as much as Clark was loath to admit it. If something did happen, if for some reason he—

*nods a lot* That's a really important part of the dynamic for me that you've explained so well here. Bruce is one of the few people who likes and respects Superman but is still leery of him. Most people either love him without reservations or hate him whole-heartedly, but Bruce captures that wonderful balance of affection and reservation that makes his opinion impossible to ignore and makes him the perfect watchdog for Clark's conscience.

And everyone sneered and whispered that it was because the host was a drunkard and a philanderer but none of that changed the fact that they still showed up, and every ticket was another vaccination or prosthetic limb or new computer.

*squees* Mina and I both love seeing Bruce get things done as Bruce in Gotham, whether behind the Brucie façade or more straightforwardly. I can never imagine that he focuses everything into Batman and doesn't use Bruce's power and status for good, and I'll never tire of scenes that show him working that angle, especially when written from Clark's dawning comprehension. Just gorgeous.

    Alis' Reply:
I totally don't think Bruce gets nearly enough credit for just being himself. Sure, he's (usually) supposed to be an idiot, but he's also the head of a massive multinational company. I just... can't believe that he wouldn't use that, either.

Eeee, I loved this! Your writing style is so polished and witty. You could write 3000 words on the Dewey decimal system and I'd still be eating out of the palm of your hand. :D And your take on the boys is delightful. You did a great job capturing how much trouble it is for Bruce to act like an idiot and get things done at the same time, and your movieverse Clark! Oh, between the "uninspiring" record of his life that Bruce dug up and his crushed disappointment over Batman turning him away ... eep, I just want to hug him. *squishes him* This fic does such a beautiful job of capturing the loneliness he's plagued by, but without making him mopey. :D

One of my favorite lines was this one:

the man was big — both tall and broad-shouldered — though slouched over with the kind of permanently apologetic expression that the very large occasionally developed after many years of interacting with a world that was too small and too fragile for them.

Because I know quite a few very tall people who hold themselves that way, and I've always thought that Clark (at least in his civilian guise) would do the same thing. :)

Ahh, and the white tie! I'd never heard of that either, but now that I've Googled it, I can't wait to "see" the guys in it.

Also, loved the ending line of Part 3. What a great answer to the question "Who watches the watchmen" (although I don't actually know if that's what that Latin phrase meant, I'm just assuming here, lol =P).

Anyway, I hope you continue this! I can't wait to see what comes from Bruce's plan to befriend Clark and uncover his identity!

    Alis' Reply:
My movie!Clark is such a woobie; I can't help it, he just comes out that way! XD

And, yeah; I've got a couple of very tall friends (one is almost seven feet!) so I've had a bit of practice studying how they move. I had this one friend for litterally years and I never noticed how tall he was until I happened to watch some girl attempt to beat him up in the playground one day; he just put his hand on her head and held her at arm's length and she couldn't touch him. It was... really eye opening, since before seeing him do that it'd never even occurred to me he was big because he didn't 'act' it.

My Clark is based mostly on an old boss of mine, though, who had this deceptively meek sort of slouch and expression that varied between apologetic and totally daggy... and then once in a while he'd stand up straight and serious and it'd just be, like, boom! Suddenly he had some much presence.

And yes, you're right about the quote. It's actually from a Latin poet called Juvenal. In the original context he's talking about the impossibility of husbands enforcing puritan morality on their wives because they themselves are immoral. :P

This was great! Bravo! You do a fabulous Bruce Wayne. :)

Thank you very much! You're, er, one of my favourite S/B authors so you'll have to excuse me while I go gush in fangirlish glee for a while. ^^"
