Yay. You updated...
And such a wonderful update it was. :-) Absolutely loved it. The way you portray the characters is really interesting and extremely well-written (And those two must be some of the most difficult characters to write).
Great job! :-D

This series is just absolute fantastic!!! You write their personalties absolutely amazingly (and making me like both of the characters both by themselves and together - their interaction is very well written!)
I hope you update soon. :-)

So, Sukunami shamelessly nudged me this way to point out your Authority fics (of which I'm now, more or less, addicted to, you bitch.) and then I find out you have this wide magically array of fanfics, including World's Finest. *notes Jen's reviews, waves entusiastically*
I hit the end of this chapter and whimpered, literally. Not that pathetically pained whimper, no. It was more of that sulky infant whimper, right before they start screaming because you really, really, shouldn't have stopped doing that. It being 2 am and the over the hill texan sleeping upstairs were the only things keeping me from railing against the injustice. So, be proud. You made an adult throw an inner hissy fit. There has to be a tally sheet somewhere for that. Probably in heaven, me thinks, cause that's an accomplishment.
Now, to actually address what you've written instead of my own lack of cardinal virtues - kindness, forgiveness, patience - I bow before your Clark and split my soul asunder in envy. I love him, so much. The unintentional yet profoundly fitting aerial theatrics, also known as 'tripping' to the greater populous of New York, New Hampsire, and the left half of New Guinea, just stole my heart. I mean, so many Clarks ACT like Clark, but they're not really the socially disadvataged farm boy. That, and his spacial misgivings with the universe shaped thieves of something-ness. That made me want to cuddle him, like a little kid afraid of monsters under the bed. It's such a ridiculous thought, but at the same time, you can't help but understand their fear.
Bruce's flirting filled me with glee, too. It was just subtle enough that he had to be debonair to pull it off, but just obvious enough you could picture it with nothing but words. OO! And the tension in the car was, er... damn it, my brain has decided to collapse into a swirly miso consistency mass of grey matter... Well, the car was swell - on principle, I refuse to use the term 'great' without supporting evidence - and I adored it.
*nods*

I think chapter 6 is my favorite chapter yet. :-) :-) :-) So very like Bruce to give up on a place suitably run down and just go for nice but very discreet. *grins* Poor Clark, arriving wet and disheveled. I've done that (with work meetings), and it immediately makes you feel incredibly insecure and like you're at a disadvantage. Fortunately Bruce is somewhat invested in making him comfortable. :-)
I love this little detail:
"As always, it felt like cheating somehow, and he was equal parts angry at himself for thinking that way — for feeling guilty about what he was — and for resorting to using his powers for something so mundane in the first place."
It's so very much like Clark to worry about these things. And it really reminds the reader that Clark Kent and Superman aren't as separate as they often feel. How does a person with superpowers as significant as Clark fit themselves into a world designed for and by ordinary people?
I love the feeling that Bruce was getting "business" out of the way and then getting down to the _true_ business of getting to know Clark Kent. And I love even more that he let Clark see the _real_ Bruce Wayne. I know he has reasons for doing it, but it's so rare for Bruce to relax and be himself that it feels incredibly intimate when he does do it for someone. It's clear that Clark feels that intimacy, too, and enjoys it, even if he isn't entirely sure of where the feeling is coming from.
I adored the moment when Clark realized he could trust Bruce and smiled a real smile, and the fact that Bruce's heart leapt at the sight of it. Clark has a hell of a smile!
I loved this part, too:
"The back of his mind kept telling him that Bruce was a professional small-talker, plying him with the kind of meaningless questions and repetitive feedback that were staples of the trade, but somehow it didn’t matter, really, and Clark found himself telling anecdote after (edited) anecdote about his childhood in Smallville and his job and the news and back again."
It seems like an odd part to really enjoy, but I've been spoken to by a professional small-talker, and when they're really good they make conversation fun. I was 12 years old and extremely, extremely shy and this guy (a friend of my dad's) took the time over a dinner with something like seven adults and me to draw me out and get me talking about what I loved. It's one of my favorite memories because at the time I regarded social situations as something to be suffered through and this man made me enjoy that dinner.
And you so didn't need all the personal detail. *sheepish* I just wanted you to know that you completely evoked that memory for me and that it really added something special to reading this chapter of the story. :-)
Another, more predictable awesome line was this one:
"“Gosh yes, and I’m sure it will be dreadfully useful when I need to engage in an illegal high speed car chase. In my multi-million dollar vanity sports car.”"
*chortles* I loved that!
I really adored this chapter, and I look forward to more!

Unfortunately, the reason for the slutter might not be quite what you (or Clark) want... Then again, it is Bruce, so who knows.
And you so didn't need all the personal detail.
No no, that's really great. As an author I love knowing when something I've written has managed to touch a personal chord with someone. It's never silly or TMI or whatever; connecting with people is one of the reasons why I write.
*chortles* I loved that!
I originally only had the first sentence there but Bruce needed the extra clarification.

I love this! It's so brilliantly in character! I await more with eagerness!

I seriously cannot count how many times I've read over these few chapters so far - everyone once in a blue moon I stumble across a fanfic that is so in-character and believable and *real* that it sort of shocks me into noticing how poor the source material usually is at communicating the actual emotions and motivations of the characters. I'm guessing from Jen (in Japan)'s comment here that she already read the next chapter - very reassuring, as I can't wait to read it myself! Just wanted to let you know how much I'm loving this story, and how it hits every single one of my buttons for what I love in fanfic (minus the "story is complete" button, but hopefully you won't be abandoning this!).

Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying.
And yes, Jen's read ahead; I release unbeta'd chapters through my LJ before Dan cleans them up for me to post on w_f.

Oh, you had me a bit worried when you said Bruce freaked out, as I'm rather used to him being quite harsh to Clark at that point in many stories.
But this kind of freaking-out is entirely reasonable, very in-character, and actually quite touching.
And he talked. A lot. Enough to give Bruce the impression that he hadn’t really talked to anyone for a very long time. Kent had certainly had friends at one point, but the stories about them were mostly old; his recently anecdotes had almost exclusively mentioned ‘co-workers’ and ‘acquaintances’.
Oh, I do love to see Bruce using his detective skills to unravel the mystery that is Clark and noticing little details like that, details which break my heart too. Movie-Clark is such a huge woobie. Also loved the line about the stories that start off "Back on the farm" and are more interesting than anything starting that way should be.
So thrilled and happy top see more! Yay!

That he is indeed, and that's why we love him.

I think at this point Bruce is soobsessedsmitten that he'd think any story was brutally fascinating and wring it for every last shred of 'evidence' it could possibly produce.

Part 5! Yay! I love the fact that Bruce was crouching there for hours, waiting for Clark to notice him. *g* You've only just met him, Bruce, he hasn't started keeping an ear on you 24/7 yet! You're building up the identity issues very well. I find myself increasingly curious about just how the reveal will go.
Thanks for sharing!
Alis' Reply:
I suspect I'll be tempting to do something very understated for the reveal... at least on Bruce's side ("Yes I know. Now about this thing..."). I can't decide whether poor Clark freaks out or not; got a few potential scenes banging around in my head, see which one shakes out in the mix.
And thanks for enjoying!erin aka Cathedral_junki (7th January, 2008 @ 10:29 pm)
*Cackles gleefully* Ma hahahaha update. I've been checking *hourly* for this.
"Bruce decided mind-Alfred could go to hell"
*falls over laughing* where do you come up with this stuff?! This is just one of the greatest mental picures *ever* i'm enjoying this story so much, the interaction between these two is *golden*. I can't wait for the next chapter!Jen (4th January, 2008 @ 9:09 pm)
More awesomeness! I'm so enjoying the sort of "We know but we aren't exactly SURE" feel of this...which applies both to their identities and to their romantic status, lol. Both of them are fantastic, but Bruce is amazing--predatory, possessive, yet warm and humane as well. The moments when each of them gives up a little of their alpha-male ego to connect with the other are absolutely magical.
I can hardly wait for more!
