Okay, damnit, this time I'm cutting and pasting comments elsewhere, then repasting them here! Because as usual there's too much cool to not quote and point...
The bit of Bruce that is not Bruce — the bit Clark calls The Bat in lieu of any other name, though in reality it’s not much like a bat at all
Man, the psychic link was so beautiful and resonantly written, I cannot get enough of all the little nuances and ways it plays out. Gorgeous!
He calls it Batnix — because prefixing everything Bruce owns with ‘bat’ drives the man subtly crazy
*snickers* You know that's true of canon Bruce, absolutely. Especially movieverse Bruce, who won't even call the Batmobile by its proper name. When I'm writing in Bruce's head he won't even call it the Batcave. It's just the cave (other people will refer to it as the Batcave, but they better not let Bruce catch them doing so)
He doesn’t bother looking up; in a way, they never leave each other’s presence, which makes exchanging greetings feel… silly, somehow.
*beams* Again, the psychic link makes them just wonderfully in sync in all the best of ways.
Bruce can feel a thrill of expectant lust run through the jachnarr — though Kal’s expression is completely impassive — and he knows that the game is on.
Man, from the moment Kal shows up at the party this story kicks into massive coolsexyromantic overdrive and never stops. Everything about that scene is breathtaking, from the costume to the flirting and the echoes through the link, and the tryst ("tryst" is so the best word for it) is beautiful and hot. And Rachel and Lois make an awesome team, by the way.
The dim light a thief of saturation, leaving him wrapped in midnight and crystal and carmine, heart fluttering in desperate anticipation.
*points* Perfectly beautiful. *sighs happily*

They kinda started to... conspire in my head. I tried to stop them, but to no avail, I'm afraid.Nix (20th January, 2008 @ 10:43 pm)
I really, really enjoyed reading this. Just thinking of Bruce being so captivated by Kal so publicly was wonderful. I kind of wanted people to catch them together, even if that would have been horrible for Kal-as-Clark! But you played it perfectly. :-)
Thank you for sharing!Northernwalker (19th January, 2008 @ 12:32 pm)
This works BEAUTIFULLY!
"Clark feels no temptation to look. Bruce has secrets of his own, but Clark knows the secrets he shares outweigh those he keeps by a thousand-fold."
It's hard to do a balanced relationship between the boys but this feel right.
"because prefixing everything Bruce owns with ‘bat’ drives the man subtly crazy "
Evil Kal!
"Clark has only seen this process fail once, after one particularly dark and bloody and futile week, when Bruce had buried himself so far and so deep it had taken all of Clark and Kal and Superman together to pull him back. The thought of it still sets his teeth on edge, and he tries not to think what would have returned in his absence. If anything had returned at all."
/shudders This needs a story to go with it.
"Bruce doesn’t understand children; it’s one of the points they differ on and it hurts, sometimes, because no matter the issues with gender or species, Bruce knows Kal’s technology is sufficient to provide them with a son or daughter if they so wished it. But every time the thought strays into his mind all he can think about is one frayed line, one lucky shot, and he knows he can’t do it. Not for Kal, not for anyone."
The man has a point. Poor both of them.
Fic love! So glad you posted this.SMGriffin (19th January, 2008 @ 2:43 am)

Clark tripping on the robe, only to catch himself on air - It's the perfect balance of clumsy human and controling kryptonian. I'm also always reminded of what a lazy fangirl I am that I can't even pretend to understand Kyptonian. I wonder if they have a class for that somewhere? That would be interesting, if nothing else. 'Languages of the 20th Century: Kryptonian, Elvish, and Klingon' I'd so take it. Ooo, maybe they'd teach us Wookie...
OH! JASON! His hugging made me coo out loud. It was so sweet! Course my father now thinks I have an unhealthy fascination for Tory on Mythbusters, but my timing could have been worse. It might have been Adam on screen.

There's alas not a lot of Kryptonian; just some basic grammar and words floating around. The rest of it we make up; consensus building, you know how it is.muscatlove (19th January, 2008 @ 1:51 am)
...Seriously, I am sitting here just staring at the monitor and I feel this buzzing in my chest the whole time I'm reading this story, and I can picture every last detail and just.. guh. I think I recall you saying you like knowing what people like about the fic, and I'm guessing that "every single line" is a bit too general..
“Better you than me,” she says, because while Lois and Brucie flirt outrageously she’s only ever met the pure, undiluted version of the man once and says the experience still gives her the creeps.
Isn't that the truth. Strong as Lois is, I can't think of anyone but Kal (and Alfred, I suppose) who can take the whole picture without flinching.
He calls it Batnix — because prefixing everything Bruce owns with ‘bat’ drives the man subtly crazy...
I cracked up - I just love the idea of Kal doing it to tease and annoy.
Work always, always, comes first. It’s the only way they can be together.
This makes me kind of sad, but I think it's a fundamental truth of their relationship - life is the Mission, and if you want to get anywhere, you have to work with it instead of around it.
People say Clark has rubbed off on him. When they’re being kind.
I am intrigued at the idea of Bruce and Clark having a public relationship, even if they can't show half of what they feel for each other while being those personalities. It also makes me wonder how long it's going to be necessary for Bruce to play the part of Brucie - at what age can he start letting it fade, if ever? Not that I think most anyone outside his inner circle could handle even a fraction of the real Bruce..
He likes Richard — much more than the other man realises — because Richard took Lois and that gave Bruce Clark, which is a debt he will never be able to repay.
You know, I really hated Superman Returns because I felt they did such a disservice to the story with terrible writing and the whole "you'll never guess what the big trouble will be! Ohhh yeah, A WHOLE CONTINENT OF KRYPTONITE!" crap instead of trying to make up a coherent and semi-original plot. But I like this version of that universe, all the annoying parts cut out and just the people and their relationships left behind.
That’s what people do. Normal people. Or so he's heard.
It wouldn't be Bruce without a little paranoia.
..and Kal — who’s just about managed to pull himself back together — rolls his eyes, throws his hands up in a too-human gesture.
I like it when the different identities blend a bit - while it's easy to see SR Clark with Kal as the main aspect of his personality (as I grumble that it's because Clark had so little to do with the movie), this sort of softens and humanizes their relationship in a really sweet way.
“Perhaps I could fake my own death…” “I think you only get one of those,” Rachel reminds him.
Poor, poor Bruce, trapped in a situation that he created for himself.
I'm going to shut myself up now and just say that I absolutely look forward to more of your stories!

Aah, good.
I never get emotive responses from my own writing, so it's really hard for me to tell how effective it is but... that's the effect I'm looking for.
It also makes me wonder how long it's going to be necessary for Bruce to play the part of Brucie - at what age can he start letting it fade, if ever?
I think probably never, really. I mean, it's evident that he would have been intelligent during his school days but Brucie is a bit of an undisciplined, lost puppy. With Clark as a 'buffer' of sorts he doesn't have to indulge in the whole "jumping clothed into the spa with models" side of fecklessness, but he's still seen as sort of vain and vapid and prone to indulging in stupid, dangerous behaviour. I'd imagine that there are also persistent rumours of his infidelity, too, so people always think they're in with a 'chance', thus the constant attempts at flirting (and Brucie probably encourages it, short of actually sleeping with anyone, because the reality of his empathic bond with Kal in this 'verse negates jealousy). I'd imagine that the only thing that would completely kill Brucie off was if Bruce was forced to 'out' himself as Batman for some reason. Short of that, I don't see it happening. Brucie is too useful, in his own way.
while it's easy to see SR Clark with Kal as the main aspect of his personality
To me, I think, there's not really a 'dominant' part, even though I name them like that in fic (you have to remember that the narration is coming from the point of view of a flawed observer; plus it's a useful shorthand for the audience). I see 'Kal-ark' as being confident in himself but not confident around other people. So he can do the whole Big Damn Hero act when he's in a position of power, but as soon as things start to deviate from the script (i.e. he has to start interacting with other humans, as a human) he starts getting awkward both from the point of view of an alien who's spent long periods of time alone and the older version of the school geek. Essentially I see him as an extreme introvert who's created this highly extroverted personality for professional purposes; which isn't uncommon.
Then there's the fact that one of my kinks is sexually aggressive, Big-Damn-Alpha-Male!Kal, so throw that onto the heap as well. UIP!Clark's had issues in the past with his more 'primal' side, though by this point in the 'verse he's more or less worked them out (or, more rightly; Bruce had worked them out for him).
Anyway, glad you enjoyed!erin aka Cathedral_junki (19th January, 2008 @ 12:12 am)

I'd love to know how these two in this particular fic got together.
the story telling, is, as always, beautiful.
And enjoying read all around.

This is UIP-verse, so that's how they got together. They've been together for about two years here.BradyGirl (18th January, 2008 @ 11:22 pm)
Oh, man, this is so beautiful! The descriptions, the emotions, the hotness!

Kal's Kryptonian outfit sounds so lovely! You describe it with such detail.
I love the way the imperious, glittering Kal can still be very much Clark.
And Lois is the perfect one to watch their backs, silly, horny boys.
I love the final scene and the swirling emotions.
Beautiful!

I actually drew Kal's outfit in this; as soon as I get my scanner and PhotoShop back up and running I'll post it.
